Cannabis Use: Weed My Lips! (1-2 hour CE course)
Marijuana use for medical and recreational purposes has been legalized in more than 30 states. Patients are more open to talk about cannabis use and might report their use to a dental office. Synthetic cannabinoid-based medications and indications for their use, as well as systemic and oral effects of cannabis use will be outlined. The participants will analyze the effectiveness of cannabis as an alternative for pain management and potential for inducing addiction. Difference between cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids will be evaluated. The participants will discuss implications of acute and chronic cannabis use on providing routine dental care. That Gut Feeling: Gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions and oral health (1-2 hour CE course)
Two million Americans are diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)—Crohn’s & ulcerative colitis—and the number is increasing by 70 thousand new cases annually. At the same time, about 10-20% of the adult population has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). During this course, participants will define IBD, IBS and celiac disease and discuss the differences of these conditions, prognosis and methods of treatment. The participants will compare oral signs of these conditions and assess risks for oral diseases. The participants will also evaluate the effects of medications, need for medical consultation, modifications to routine dental care and oral hygiene instructions for patients with these conditions.
-
Obesity, Ozempic and Oral Health (1-2 hour CE course)
Obesity is a pressing health issue in the United States, affecting approximately 42% of adults and significantly increasing their risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and various cancers. This condition also poses a heightened risk for periodontal disease, a concern for dental professionals. With around 6% of the population currently using weight loss medications like Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy to manage their blood glucose levels, and the recent FDA approval of tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound) for chronic weight management, it is essential for dental practitioners to stay informed about these medications. These medications can cause gastrointestinal discomfort or nausea that can be relevant when considering sedation options and managing potential post-operative discomfort or complications. Some of the medications can have oral side effects such altered taste, xerostomia, increased risk for caries and periodontal disease, “Ozempic breath”. This course will equip dental professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively address the unique challenges posed by obesity and weight loss medications in their practice, enhancing patient care and outcomes.
